The history of the village ...

The village of Auberive was born around its Cistercian abbey founded in 1135 on the banks of the Aube (24th daughter of Clairvaux) and was originally only a group of lay brothers. The whole then formed an enclave particularly relevant to France in this border region between Champagne and Burgundy. Formerly known under the name "D'enclos d'Auberive" and limited by high walls that can still be seen around the abbey; it consisted of an old farmhouse (La Theurelle) which will then extend to the rue des Fermiers, a few houses for craftsmen and the wood guards of the abbey (the street of the school of the boys) , to an audience and finally to an abbey palace from the Rennaissance (the Abbey).

All this population at the very service of the abbey (lay brothers, craftsmen, service personnel, employees, etc.) then depended directly on the seigneury and on the full justice of the Abbot of Auberive. Including 121 inhabitants in 1742, this population will not really be freed until the Revolution of 1789. But as it was not yet constituted as an administrative community (only as a parish), it should have been dispersed and the current village never existed. , if the sale of National Property in 1790 had not encouraged the arrival of a large number of foreigners who came to settle in Auberive, thus supplementing a few farmers who were able to buy back their homes (633 inhabitants in 1804).

This phenomenon, linked to new constructions, grew to such an extent that Auberive was very early elevated to the rank of commune (1790), yet only taking on real importance when it was erected as the capital of the canton to the detriment of Giey. -on-Aujon (1800), with the installation of a justice of the peace, a gendarmerie, a financial collector, a school, and six annual fairs in summer.

In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

Despite its 7,064 hectares, which makes it the third Haut-Marnaise commune by area (after Pancey and Châteauvillain), the commune of Auberive, which is 70% covered by forests, has not had any forestry income since the beginning; the Revolution of 1789 transformed all the woods of the abbey (4,982 hectares) into a large national massif, currently managed by the National Forestry Office (ONF).

In addition to this, you need to know more about it.

Despite this, the village will expand rapidly in the course of the nineteenth century around industries related to wood and iron processing (forges and furnaces): creation of new housing, construction and expansion of a parish church, establishment in several stages of the schools, the presbytery, the town hall and the gendarmerie, to finally arrive at the current situation of the village.
